Former Steamboat Springs resident Vicki Jeanne Leatzow Rowland passed away Feb. 21, 2009, at her home in St. George, Utah, surrounded by her devoted family after a most courageous and hard-fought battle with inflammatory breast cancer. She was 67.
Vicki was born Dec. 11, 1941, in St. Petersburg, Va., to Victor Bruce and Nancy Jane Ernest Leatzow. After World War II, her family returned to their roots in Palos Park, Ill., where she attended grammar school and graduated from Carl Sandburg High School in 1959. After being accepted to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Vicki enrolled and received her bachelor's degree in English education, and began her teaching career as a fourth and eighth grade teacher. She later followed the footsteps of her parents and grandparents by becoming a fourth generation realtor, obtaining her realtor/broke license at the University of Colorado. This would be her lifelong career of helping others find that perfect place to call home.
After college graduation, she married Douglas D. Rowland, of Des Moines, Iowa, on July 18, 1964. In 1971, they made the move to Colorado and settled in Steamboat Springs, where they would raise their three girls and continue to live until 2002, when they moved and settled in St. George, Utah.
Vicki worked as a principal and assistant broker for The Colorado Group in Steamboat Springs, Kayenta Homes and Properties, Sunbrook Realty Group and Split Rock Realty, located in the St. George, Utah, area. Her love of serving people would continue after her unexpected retirement from real estate.
Vicki is survived by Douglas D. Rowland, her husband of 44 years; daughters Jennifer Rowland-Fakahua and her husband, Oscar, and their children Marley McCall Finau, Mason Douglas Matekitonga, Mark Drake Misinale and Morgan Drew Malakai, of Cedar City, Utah; Mary Meghan Rowland-England and her husband, Dean, of Lewistown, Mont., and their daughter, Reegan Mackenzie Rowland; Amy Rowland-Johnston and her husband, Robb, and their children Evan Barnett and Avery Brooke, of Highlands Ranch; brothers Victor Bruce Leatzow, Jr., and his wife Penny, of Kalispell, Mont., and James Howard Leatzow and his wife, Carolyn, of Three Lakes, Wis. She was preceded in death by her father, Victor, her mother, Nancy, and younger brother, Mark Ernest Leatzow.
