Florence had been a resident of Colorado Springs for the past 27 years. She, her husband and family also previously resided in Colorado Springs in the 1950s.
She was born Oct. 14, 1904, to Daniel Prue Phelps and Nina Lulu Kindead Phelps in Sarpy County, Neb. They lived on the historic farm of Count Creighton, who later founded Creighton College.
Florence graduated from Clinton High School in 1923 and also graduated from Weldona High School in Colorado in 1924 to have the required credits to enroll in the Nurses Training School at Greeley College. She earned her nurse's degree Sept. 1, 1927.
Florence married Harold Lemar Hidy on Feb. 28, 1928, in Greeley. In addition to being a nurse, Florence was the bookkeeper for the H.L. Hidy Plumbing Co. in Steamboat Springs and in other places they lived during their 52 years together.
She nursed in the old Steamboat hospital on Seventh Street for Dr. Willett and Dr. Crawford. She also was active in Steamboat politics and was a committee chairwoman.
In 1950, she chaperoned the Steamboat Springs High School ski band on a trip to Chicago where they marched in a parade.
Florence is survived by a son, James; a daughter, Verna Atkinson; a granddaughter, Margaret Peterson-Fulcher; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; as well as by many beloved nieces and nephews and their respective families.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her beloved husband, Harold; her young son Charles; two brothers; and three sisters.
A family graveside service was held March 11 at Lakeview Cemetery in Windsor, Colo. A memorial service was held March 14 at Black Forest Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs. Florence requested that in lieu of flowers, her friends and family make memorial contributions to the Colorado School for the Blind or to Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care.
