Steamboat Today - April 7, 2013

Gary Arthur Sampsel, a longtime Steamboat Springs resident, was born April 21, 1945, in Houston and passed away April 1, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn., from complications following surgery.
Gary was a self-proclaimed carpenter and entrepreneur with a great number of friends throughout the Yampa Valley. He lived in Steamboat from 1987 to 2007 when he moved to east Tennessee to be a grandpa. Gary had a full life with many adventures throughout his days in Texas, Mexico and Colorado as well as during his time in the military. Gary had battled to put his cancer in remission and was loving his life as a grandpa at the end of a dead-end road on his beautiful property in east Tennessee.
Gary took pleasure in many different things throughout his life such as driving his cars, playing pool at The Cue and VFW, grilling steak, sharing a cocktail, road trips, Mexican beaches and being a handyman and business adviser for his friends. More recently, it was spending time with Polly, watching his grandsons play and walking in the woods with his dog, Clio. Gary enjoyed life, loved his friends, cherished his family and fought hard for his life.
Gary is survived by his loving partner, Polly Thornton; sons Chance Sampsel (spouse Malea, mother Marie) and Dylan Beckish (partner Rigel, mother Fran); grandchildren Quinton and Caden Sampsel, Brittany Nichols and James and Courtney Jackson; daughters Julie, Tiffany and Shelley; brother Michael; nephew Scott; niece Shelly; and all of their families. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jamie Adams, his parents and his sister.
Gary will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors as they remember a great and loving man who touched the lives of many people in all walks of life.
Gary’s family, friends and neighbors will gather for a celebration of his life on his birthday, April 21, at his home in Johnson City.
