Elaine Mae Walkup was born Sept. 10, 1939, in St. Paul, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Bernice (Starkey) Grammer. She was raised in Denver and Steamboat Springs, where she graduated from high school.
Elaine married Leon “Buck” Sumpter in 1958, and they became the parents of four children. They made their home in various communities, including Steamboat Springs, Topeka, Kan., Hayden and in Wyoming. They later were divorced.
Elaine later married Martin Gene Walkup and became stepmother to Jeff. They made their home in Craig. Gene died 12 years ago.
Elaine worked as a waitress when she was younger but primarily was a homemaker.
She enjoyed sewing, beading and fishing.
Elaine died March 27, 2013, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. She was 73.
Elaine is survived by her daughter Dianna Murphy and her husband, Michael, of Hayden; her sons Scott Sumpter, of Carlin, Nev., Doug Sumpter and his wife, Dena, of Scottsbluff, Neb., Delbert Sumpter, of New Castle, and Jeff Walkup and his wife, Cheryl, of Parker; her grandchildren Michele Pike, Calvin Murphy, Amanda Tucker, Allen Tarr, Charlie Sumpter, Josh, Marissa and Mariah Walkup; eight great-grandchildren; her sisters Janice Rogers and Marlene Peyton, both of Grand Junction, Carol Lewis and Barbara Rieley, both of LaPoint, Utah; and her brothers Butch Grammer, of Vernal, Utah, Bob Grammer, of Gillette, Wyo., Bill Grammer, of Craig, and Rick Grammer, of Grand Junction.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin Gene Walkup; and her daughter-in-law Pam Sumpter.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services were held March 30, 2013, at Grant Mortuary Chapel with Jeff Walkup officiating.
