Karl W. Avery, 102, passed
away on Friday, February 15,
2013, while in residence at a Rehabilitation
Center in Lakewood,
Colorado.
Karl was born July 17, 1910, at
home in Pittsfield, Ohio. He married
Mary Elizabeth Schubert on
May 29, 1931 in Beaver Falls, PA
and was preceded in death by her
on June 7, 1993. They celebrated 62 years together, and she was the
light of his life. He remained a widower upon her passing.
Mr. Avery graduated from the Oberlin School of Commerce in
Oberlin, OH in 1930. He began his career with the Union Carbide
Company in Cleveland, OH, and after seven years he resigned to
enter the United States Postal Service as a railway mail clerk. He
rose through the ranks to become an Air Transportation Officer responsible
for airmail delivery in the western states and based in
Denver, CO. A photograph of him sorting mail from the wreckage
of an airplane crash over the Grand Canyon was featured in LIFE
Magazine in the late 1950's. Karl retired from the Postal Service in
1968 after 31 years of service.
Upon his retirement, Karl built a beautiful home on Chair Mountain
Drive in Redstone, CO overlooking the Crystal River and
Mount Sopris. He continued to hunt and fish and indulged his passion
for music by tape-recording his favorite artists and selections
from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. He was an accomplished trombonist
who also loved ballroom dancing. In his late 80's and through h is
90's, Karl was inspired to write poetry. He had a remarkable
memory and intellect that remained intact until his death. His Christian
faith fortified his strong belief in God and helped him li ve by
his values of honesty, integrity, and fidelity.
In 2006, Karl permanently relocated to Grand Junction, CO where
he maintained his connections with old friends and established new
friends as well. It was the strength of these relationships tha tenabled
Karl to live independently until January of 2013.
Mr. Avery was preceded in death by his only son, Mark who was a
veteran of the Viet Nam war; by his parents, Winfield Scott and
Amanda Marie (nee Scholobohm) Avery, and his younger brothers,
Scott and Richard Avery.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Sally Avery of Denver, CO;
grandchildren, Richard, Tina Lewis, Robert, Raymond, Randy, Russell,
and Virginia Lansing; 15 great-grandchildren, and one
great-great grandchild. He also has a surviving brother, Dr. Robert
Avery (Betty) of Tequesta, FL. His extended family including his
13 nieces and nephews held him in the highest esteem.
A private Memorial Service for family and friends will be held
later in the year.
