Lucille Fiegel Whitaker and Kenneth Whitaker will be laid to rest
in Calvary Cemetery today, June 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.
Lucille was born in Grand Junction, Colorado on December 13,
1916, to Anna and Jacob Fiegel. She graduated from Fruitvale High
School and then went to Pueblo, CO to work at the State Hospital
where she met her future husband, Ken Whitaker. Soon after their
marriage, Ken joined the Navy.
While he was away, Lucille worked in Grand Junction for her
brother, Ray, at “Fiegels Trading Post” and helped her father during
the peach harvest. After Ken’s discharge, they moved to Boulder to
begin a long adventure and happy life together. After her husband’s
death, Lucille moved to Wichita Falls, TX to be near their son, Doug
and family.
Kenneth Whitaker was born in Denver, Colorado. He attended
Denver schools and then went to work in Pueblo at the State Hospital
where he met Lucille. Soon after they were married, he joined the
Navy and served as a Seabee, and was awarded the Purple Heart
Medal.
After his discharge, he attended Colorado University in Boulder,
receiving a degree in journalism.
They moved to Greeley, Colorado for his first job and then to several
other states before settling in California where he worked for
The Sacramento Bee.
Together, Ken and Lucille studied and practiced the Real Estate
Business on a part time basis. Ken also worked part time for H & R
Block during tax time.
They enjoyed traveling and camping in their R.V. with their children,
Douglas and Anne. They especially looked forward to visiting
relatives and friends in Colorado and fishing on Grand Mesa. Lucille
loved to go to yard sales and collected many “treasures”.
They are survived by a son, Douglas (Rosalie) Whitaker of Wichita
Falls, TX, and daughter, Anne Hernandez of Sacramento, CA; four
grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
