Gilbert A. Gonzales passed away in his home from natural causes
on November 18, 2012.
He was born in Grand Junction to Albert and Jesse Gonzales. He
graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1955, and continued
to make his home in Grand Junction except for small periods of time
working in construction in other parts of the state. He didn’t like to
be away from home however, and he became a professional house
painter early in the 1970’s. He loved his work and loved his customers,
many who employed him repeatedly because of his work ethic
and his honest and friendly demeanor.
He was in the National Guard for two years but had to terminate
his service early to take care of his ill mother. He lived on South
Fourth Street for over 50 years until the house burned down in 1998
taking away almost everything he owned. He courageously continued
on with his life, moving to a house just down the street. He later
sold that house to the City when they constructed the Riverside
Parkway and moved to his last home on Orchard Avenue.
Gilbert never married but had many friends. He loved to target
shoot and go out to eat with his closest friend, Richard Swann. He
also enjoyed visiting every week with his dear friends, Ronald and
Donna Stevens. They all will miss him sorely.
Gilbert was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was a
very kind man and was always helping others without expecting
anything in return.
Gilbert is survived by his sisters Josephine (Floyd) D. Vinton, and
Jackie Gonzales of Grand Junction, and brother, Juan Gonzales of
Whittier, CA.
A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Saturday,
December 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
