Former Oak Creek resident William Bernard Burrowes passed away March 3, 2008, in Toppenish, Wash. He would have been 100 years old on April 28.
Bernard was born April 28, 1908, in Boulder. He moved to Oak Creek in 1916 with his parents, who homesteaded on lower Trout Creek, where he and his seven siblings grew up.
Bernard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a retired volunteer firefighter for Oak Creek. He loved to fish, hunt and was famous for his square dance calling. He was a longtime member of Jehovah's Witnesses. Because of ill health, he spent his last years in Toppenish, Wash., near his sons and family.
Bernard is survived by his wife Phyllis Burrowes of Oak Creek; sons Bill Burrowes of Toppenish, Wash., and Pat Burrowes and his wife Josie, of Vancouver, Wash.; brother John Burrowes of Eugene, Ore.; and sister Laura George of Ely, Nev. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ada (Babe) Burrowes; brother Bill Burrowes; and sisters Ida Markovich, Francis Fairbanks and Lucille Lucas. Bernard will be sadly missed by his family and friends
