Anne M. Breckinridge, Teacher, 59

Vail Daily - January 16, 2001

CRASH VICTIM WAS TEACHER, FOSTER MOM, by Matt Zalaznick.
The woman killed in Saturday's five-car pileup on I-70 near the Avon interchange has been identified as 59-year-old Ann Breckinridge, a school teacher and foster mother from Conifer.
Two cars, a van and a wrecker towing a stalled garbage truck were involved in the crash, which occurred at about 11:20 a.m. in the eastbound lane. The accident shut down that side of the highway for more than two-and-a-half hours.
The tow-truck driver, Edwin HAVENER of Edwards, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after the accident.
The crash apparently occurred when the driver of one of the cars slammed on her brakes when she saw the two truck headed toward her in the wrong direction, police said.
That car collided first with the tow truck and then hit the car driven by Breckinridge, police said.
A van traveling in the left lane then broadsided Breckinridge's car, hitting it directly in the driver's side door, police said.
Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Breckinridge, but she died at the scene. She left behind three adult children, who live out of state, police said.
Eagle County Coroner Donna Barnes said Breckinridge became a tissue donor.
No one else was seriously injured in the crash, police said.
