Longtime Hayden resident Lucille Stratton Sundberg passed away recently at the age of 100.
Lucille was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Trinidad. Her father had been through the Yampa Valley several times during the late 1800s gathering cattle for the cattle drives on the eastern plains. In 1909, he brought his family here from Trinidad by team and wagon. Her mother drove the buggy while holding Lucille, who was less than two years old, on her lap. Her dad drove the team and wagon with their belongings and the older children trailed the livestock on horseback. They arrived in the Hayden area Aug. 12, 1909, which was her brother's fifth birthday.
They filed a homestead in the Potholes area north of Hayden. Later they took over a homestead three and a half miles north of Hayden at the head of Buck Gulch on the Middle Cog, so the children could attend school. She and her brother and two sisters rode horseback the 3 1/2 miles to school. Lucille saw the first train that came into Hayden and the first Routt County fairs, where she won several horse races throughout the years. She graduated from Hayden Union High School in 1925 and then obtained a teaching certificate. She taught at Purcell in northeastern Colorado and several rural schools in Moffat County.
She married John Linde Sundberg, a native of Sweden, on Sept. 16, 1929. They operated Linde's Service Station and Garage in Hayden from 1930 to 1971. She was a bookkeeper for the business and a homemaker. She loved gardening and always had beautiful gardens. She loved to cook and bake; homemade rolls, apple pies from her own trees and angel food cakes were her specialties. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to quilt, knit and read. She highly valued education. She said that the thing she was most proud of was that all of her children attended college.
Lucille was an active member of the Hayden Congregational Church for many years and also the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Past Worthy Matron and received a 75-year award in recent years. She was active and interested in the Hayden Heritage Center, and school and community activities. She lived in the Yampa Valley for almost 99 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Aura (Carson) Stratton and by her husband, Linde, in 1989, and a sister Hazel Sunderlin. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her daughter Barbara and husband Paul Ledford of Lakewood; sons John and his wife Beth Sundberg of Hayden, Olin Sundberg of Louisville, and sister Delphine Kirby of Fallbrook. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Lisa Ledford of Plano, Texas; Paula Belcher and husband Ken of Kremmling; Andrea Ledford of Toledo, Ohio; Jon Erik Sundberg and his wife Jean of Hayden; Sig Sundberg of Craig; and Kristen Miller and husband Chris of Hayden. She also is survived by seven great-grandchildren: Wayne Sundberg of Hayden; Evan Sundberg of Yampa; Erik Sundberg of Hayden; Cole and Kent Miller of Hayden; and Jonathan and Caitlin Belcher of Kremmling. She also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hayden Congregational Church. Interment will follow in the Hayden Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hayden Congregational Church or the Hayden Heritage Center.
