Wolf D. von Schalk, longtime Hayden resident, died Aug. 3, 2008, at the Sandrock Ridge Care and Rehab Center in Craig. He was 85.
Wolf was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Berlin, Germany, the son of Hans Walker and Hildegard (Radmacher) von Schalk. He was raised there and attended Prussian Military Academy in Potsdam from 1932 to 1939. He entered the German Air Force at the age of 17 and was shot down in Africa in 1942 during World War II. He was taken as a prisoner of war and was in various prisoner camps in Africa, England and Oklahoma.
He was released in 1946 and became a civilian employee of the U.S. Army, serving with the 7th Army out of Frankfurt, Germany, from 1947 to 1950.
Wolf married Margarete Heldwein on Oct. 21, 1950, in Nurtingen, Germany. Wolf worked for the German Railroad from 1950 to 1956. Wolf and Margarete then immigrated to the U.S. on June 22, 1956, and made their home in Trenton, Mich.
Wolf and Margarete became U.S. citizens Nov. 14, 1961. In 1971, he and his family moved to Steamboat Springs, where Wolf worked at various jobs eventually becoming employed by the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., a job he kept until his retirement. He and his family moved to Hayden in the early 1990s.
He was a member of the Hayden VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Margarete, of Hayden; his son, Michael, and his wife, Angel von Schalk, of Hayden; his daughters, Sylvia Hale, of Colorado Springs, and Angela and her husband, Brett Pagenkoop, of Broomfield; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and his brother Rainer, and his son Hans D. Schalk, who died July 6, 2007.
At Wolf's request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
