Leslie Donald Weston died Aug. 5, 2008, at home in Sun Lakes, Ariz. He was 85.
Don was born March 5, 1923, in Chicago. He served with honor in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.
After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in forestry, he began his working career in Liberia, West Africa, managing a rubber plantation. When the health of one of his children required he return to the United States, he earned a PhD in education while working full time and helping to raise a family. He taught in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Illinois, but preferred working as an elementary principal with young children.
Last year, Don and his wife, Nan, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They met at the University of Michigan, where Don persuaded Nan to marry him and join him in Africa. A resident of Sun Lakes for 25 years, Don was one of the founders of the Sun Lakes Community Theater.
He appeared in leading roles in comedies such as "The Sunshine Boys" and "The Odd Couple." Don was a pillar of St. John's Anglican Church, where he served as Senior Warden and choir master. Don and Nan spent their summers for nearly 23 years in Steamboat Springs, where Don sang in the choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He loved Steamboat, and though he was not physically able to make the trip this summer, he always remembered Steamboat and his many friends there.
He is survived by his wife, Nan, sons Ray, Don and Geoff; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his sister, Marianne Sherrick. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 16 in the chapel of the Sun Lakes Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's name may be made to The Arizona Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
