Longtime Milner resident JoNell Backes died Aug. 18, 2008, at the Sandrock Ridge Care Center in Craig. She was 85.
JoNell Russell Backes was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Madison, Ky., the daughter of Joseph and Charlie Earl (Dever) Russell. She moved with her family to Milner when she was 6 years old.
JoNell married Chester Willet Backes on Sept. 5, 1939, in Steamboat Springs. They lived for a short time in Craig and then returned to Milner, where JoNell has lived ever since. She enjoyed baking, cooking and caring for her children.
JoNell is survived by her daughter, Sue Lewis, of Milner; sons Larry Backes and his wife, Glenda, of Milner; Joseph Backes and his wife, Marsha, of Lamar; and Ralph Backes, of Rangely; sisters Lillian Ussery, of Roundup, Mont., and Dorothy Eckstein, of Cedaredge; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Charlie Russell; sister Josephine Gonzales; brothers James and Tom Russell; husband Chester Backes; daughters Barbara Stinson and Helen Gurske; and a grandson, Otis Lewis.
Funeral services were held Aug. 23, 2008, at The Central Baptist Church in Hayden, with Pastor Jason Clark officiating. Her grandchildren, Kristina, Melissa and Michael sang "It is Well," accompanied by Melinda Clark on piano. Pallbearers were Larry, Troy, Randy Michael, Charlie and Chris Backes. Interment followed in the Hayden Cemetery, where she was laid to rest next to her husband, Chester.
