Steamboat Today - September 7, 2008
Former Steamboat Springs resident Joseph L. Oldfield died Aug. 7, 2008, at Longmont United Hospital, after a brief illness. He was 65.
He was born Oct. 17, 1942, in Steamboat Springs, the son of Earl and Lenore Allen Oldfield. He attended school in Steamboat Springs and graduated from Steamboat Springs High School with the class of 1960. He also attended Western State University in Gunnison. He was a member of the 1963-64 national champion wrestling team and was an All American.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-67 during the Vietnam War. He was married to Karen Oldfield for 36 years. He was a self-employed carpenter until 1968, when he went to work for the Sweetwater County School District 1 as a teacher and wrestling coach.
He also served as a county commissioner for five years and seven months. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 624 in Rock Springs, a city councilman, founder of the Rock Springs Pee Wee Wrestling League and a member of the White Pine Ski Patrol in Pinedale.
His interests included spending time with his family and friends, hunting, fishing, woodworking, politics, wrestling and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; daughters, Tara Oldfield, of Longmont, and Trish Iribarren, and her husband, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; son, David Oldfield, and his wife, of Colorado Springs; brother, Thomas Oldfield, and his wife, Diane, of LaSalle; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Oldfield, and brother, Dale Oldfield.
A celebration of life was held Aug. 14 at the Sweetwater Events Complex. Cremation has taken place.
