Shirley J. Baker, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away Sept. 4, 2008, after a lengthy illness. She was 72.
Shirley was born May 8, 1936, in Yampa to John "Oscar" Rose and Daisy May (Crisp) Rose. She grew up in Yampa and in Timbo, Ark., and she enjoyed working on her aunt Lucy's ranch at Finger Rock, south of Yampa. She graduated as valedictorian of Timbo High School in 1954, and she married John W. "Jack" Bowlus. They resided in Arkansas for a short time, and they later lived in Yampa, Denver and Cortez.
Shirley will be remembered for her love for her family and her devotion to them. Her family fondly remembers how she entertained them with her childhood stories. She enjoyed fishing and proudly proclaimed that if she baited your fishing hook, you were guaranteed to catch a fish.
At one time, Shirley took a cake decorating class and soon became well-known among her friends and family for her beautiful cakes. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers and the birds that resided in her backyard. She was an excellent seamstress, making her children's clothes as well as matching garments for their dolls while they were growing up.
She will be greatly missed by her family, but they rejoice that she is free from pain and has found joy and peace in heaven.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Paul K. Baker of Albuquerque; daughter Gail Henry, and husband Lyle, of Craig; Lori Cave, and her husband Jimmy, of Farmington, N.M.; Gail and Lori's father, J.W. Bowlus of Montrose; and grandchildren Levi Henry, Chelsea Branson, Tawnie and Jacy Cave. She also is survived by her sisters, Lorraine Rossi and her husband Robert, Bernadine Farris and her husband Conward, Clarice Marshall and her husband Virgil, Donna Ragland and her husband Bill, Lila Ward and her husband Carrol, Nancy Anderson and her husband Glen, Glenda Oetting and her husband Bruce; brothers J.D. Rose and his wife Alice, Max Rose and his wife Korky, and George Rose; numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John "Oscar" and Daisy Mae Rose; and her very dear aunt, Lucy Marshall.
Cremation has taken place, and memorial graveside services were held Saturday at South Routt Cemetery in Yampa. A luncheon for family and friends followed at Yampa Bible Church. Services were entrusted to Daniels Family Funeral Services of Albuquerque.
