Margaret Light was born in Steamboat Springs, the third child of Clarence and Anna Light. She had a happy and loving childhood, always enjoying the outdoors and participating in the many activities available to young folks.
After graduating from Steamboat Springs High School, she continued her education at Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. Margaret later enrolled in technician's training at Kirksville Osteopathic College in Kirksville, Mo., and then became employed at the Rocky Mountain Hospital in Denver. There, she met her future husband, Dr. Lee J. Cardy. They were married at her parents' home in Steamboat Springs in October 1941 and settled in Simla, where Dr. Cardy had set up his practice.
World War II changed plans of many couples, including Margaret and Lee. Lee enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was transferred to the Marine Corps. A son, Bruce Lee Cardy, was born to them while they were stationed in Albuquerque, N. M. Lee was put on active duty on the Marshall Islands, and after an injury, he was sent to Camp Pendleton, where, ironically, he was killed in a car accident.
Margaret returned to Marshall, Mo., and entered Missouri Valley College and received a bachelor's degree in education. Upon graduation, she accepted a teaching position in Independence, Mo., and later moved to Denver, where she continued her career as a teacher at Cory Elementary School. In 1968, her son, Capt. Bruce Lee Cardy, was killed while serving his country in Vietnam. After the death of her only son, she began a new career as a medical technician at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital.
Margaret enjoyed traveling and always was ready and willing for a trip, be it to Machu Picchu in Peru or a trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. One of her hobbies was china painting, and she blessed many with gifts of her beautiful artwork. Margaret was a gifted flower arranger and continued this pursuit until her death. She will not only be missed by family and her many friends, but also fellow hobby enthusiasts in Denver and Steamboat Springs.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Clarence and Anna Light; her brother, James Bruce Light; her husband, Dr. Lee Cardy; her son, Capt. Bruce Lee Cardy; and niece Kristin Temple.
She is survived by sister Audrey Temple of Steamboat Springs; her husband, Jim Temple; nephews Jeff Temple and Jamie Temple of Steamboat Springs; and Lisa Temple of Boulder; Marian Scott of Boulder; nephew Gregg Scott and niece Laurie Scott; nephews Walter and Norman Frank; Annabeth Lockhart and her family, Lloyd Lockhart and nephews Ty Lockhart and Del Lockhart.
A visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Yampa Valley Funeral Home. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
