Gary Leon Wilson, of Custer, S.D., passed away Nov. 6, 2008, at his home. He was 59.
Gary was born Aug. 9, 1949, in Steamboat Springs, to Luther Leon and Reba Eileen (Tomlinson) Wilson. He attended Soroco High School in Oak Creek, graduating in 1967. Gary worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C., for 14 months. In October 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam from March 1969 until his honorable discharge May 17, 1970. He worked around Yampa and then moved to Denver, where he worked for PCA for 11 years.
In 1987, Gary moved to South Dakota, and Feb. 24, 1989, he married Molly Gale Smith. He worked in the timber and for the Linde Sawmill until his retirement in 2006. Gary was a member of the VFW in Custer, S.D.
Gary is survived by his wife, Molly, of Custer, S.D.; mother Reba Wilson, of Yampa; stepson Tom Hendrickson and his wife, Chris, of Lake City, Fla.; stepdaughters Kim Conwell, and her husband, Tom, of Custer, S.D.; and Kelly Leil and her husband, Bob, of Pringle, S.D.; sisters Colleen Bruin and her husband, Bill, of Phippsburg; and Teresa Rhodes, and her husband, Mike, of Craig; six grandchildren: Jesse Conwell, Jacob Conwell, Autumn Conwell, Daniel Hendrickson, Hannah Stevens and Jeremy Serfoss; four great-grandchildren: Joseph Conwell, Mia Conwell, Kyle Stevens and Katelyn Stevens; and five nieces and nephews: Beth Elliott and her husband, James, Michelle Conn and her husband, Josey, Mandi Rhodes, Lori Rhodes and her husband, Mike Terpstra, and Bryan Rhodes.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer, S.D. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills, with Pastor Bill Savery officiating. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Gary's name to benefit the VFW in Custer. Donations may be left in care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills, 234 N. 6th St., Custer, SD 57730.
