Dr. Hal Charles Hackett, of Archbold, Ohio, passed away Nov. 11, 2008, at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was 82.
He was born March 15, 1926, in Adrian, Mich., the son of Lowell and Helen (Piter) Hackett. Hal married Carol Louis Schwall on Sept. 6, 1947. He was a 1944 graduate of Wauseon High School, and he received his doctorate in dental surgery from Ohio State University in 1951. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Army during the Korean War. He interned at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco and at Fort Knox, Ken., and set up his practice in Archbold in 1954.
He served on the boards of Four County Schools and Archbold Area Schools. He was past president of the local chapter of Rotary International and a member of the Archbold Area Chamber of Commerce. He joined Gideons International and served on the Gideon Bible Study and Prayer Team at the Northwest Ohio Correctional Center, qualifying to move detainees to various activities in the Correctional Center.
Hal was a pilot and earned his instrument rating. He was an active lifelong member of the Archbold United Methodist Church and a regular in the church choir. He also enjoyed fellowship and daily Mass at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church. He and the entire family went on medical missions to Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica.
Retiring after 45 years in dentistry, he enjoyed the winter months skiing in Steamboat Springs. He loved the exhilaration and the freedom in skiing down the slopes among the snow-covered pine trees with his children and grandchildren. Summer months were spent sailing and swimming with family at Devil's Lake, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; five children, Pat Thomas (Kim) Hackett, of Wauseon, Ohio; Michael Harry (Gail) Hackett, of Gates Mills, Ohio; Margaret Helen Hackett (John) Oliver, of Baltimore; Anne Mary Hackett (Danny) Ayalon, of Israel; and William Lowell Hackett, of Yuma, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Ryan Patrick Hackett, Oscar Samuel Hackett, Eve Grace Hackett, John Isaac Oliver, Nathan Hackett Oliver, Zohar Carolyn Ayalon, Avigail Louise Ayalon, Hal William Hackett, Francile Carolyn Hackett, Louis Lowell Hackett and Patrick Michael Hackett; and his sister, MaryAnn Dickson, of Groveport, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Helen Hackett.
Memorial services were held at Archbold United Methodist Church with the Rev. David David officiating. Private interment was at Archbold Cemetery with Father Gary Ferguson officiating. There was no visitation.
The family suggests memorials be given to Gideons International, the Defiance Inpatient Hospital Center or the charity of your choice. Short Funeral Home in Archbold, Ohio, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
