Toponas resident Cecil Raymond Weston passed away Dec. 14, 2008. He was 84.
Cecil was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Griswold, Iowa, the second child of nine to John and Caroline Weston. After graduating from high school in 1941 at the age of 17, he attended radio and electronics school in Chicago and St. Louis. After further training, he taught radio and code to military personnel in Chicago. While in Chicago, at the request of Dale Ellis, he chaperoned Dale's daughter Jane Ellis, who recently had moved to Chicago to work for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad after her graduation from the University of Colorado. In 1942, Cecil requested that his permanent deferment be waived so he could be drafted into the service. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps shortly thereafter and attended navigation school. Upon graduation, he was assigned to a B-29 aircraft squadron and served in the South Pacific theater. Based in Guam, he flew 16-hour, 3,000-mile round-trip missions from Guam to Japan and back. On more than one occasion, his crew members made an emergency landing on Iwo Jima when they were unable to complete the return trip to Guam.
Cecil and Jane Weston were married Sept. 28, 1945, in Los Angeles, while he was still in the service. He worked briefly for 20th Century Fox movie studio. Cecil and Jane moved to Toponas in 1949, when they purchased and operated the People's Store. Cecil and Jane sold the store in 1979 and started Weston Industries, a petroleum products transportation business. He was a past commander of the American Legion Post 189 in Yampa, a member of the Knights of Columbus, secretary-treasurer of the Egeria Roping Club, a member of the Airport Advisory Committee and Toponas Postmaster for more than 30 years.
Cecil is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane; son, Terry, of Steamboat Springs; daughters, Cathy Courtney, of Aurora, Patty Murray, of Lake Bluff, Ill., and Mary Jane Logan and Jeanie Lombardi, both of Yampa; as well as 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Cecil also is survived by his eight siblings: Gerald John Weston, Shirley Ann Doolittle, Moyne Thomas Weston, John Lawson Weston, Roy Edward Weston, Connie Marie Plumb, Larry Allen Weston and Douglas Gayle Weston.
