Steamboat Today - June 9, 2013

Eileen Lufkin, 89, of Mesa, Ariz., and Steamboat Springs, passed away May 18, 2013, at her home in Mesa surrounded by her loving caregivers.
She was born June 21, 1923 in Kansas City, Mo., to German parents, Mary (Mariana Deisz) and Joseph Adams. Eileen was the oldest of four children, all of whom preceded her in death.
She was married to Alva E. “Jerry” Hiatt in Reno, Nev., on May 3, 1950. They had four children: Nancy, Chuck, Terrence and Thomas.
Seeking a new life, she arrived in Steamboat Springs during fall 1969, when she began working at the Routt County National Bank. She delighted working in the bank, making close, lifelong friends during the years there.
On Feb. 25, 1978, she married local rancher Donald Lufkin. They enjoyed 34 years together before Don’s death in December 2012. Their fond devotion to Steamboat guided their numerous philanthropic contributions to activities and organizations in the Yampa Valley.
Eileen is survived by her daughter Nancy and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Smith, of Pueblo; and her sons, Chuck (Charles) Hiatt, of Montana, Terrence and Betsy Hiatt, of Olympia, Wash., and Thomas and Pamela Hiatt, of Bellevue, Wash; her grandchildren Ryan, Elizabeth, Emily and David Smith, Jessi Hiatt, Lindsey, Tyler Luke, Ian, Anika, Tristan and Zane, Egan and Kyly Hiatt; as well as numerous great-grandchildren.
Eileen’s family extends special thanks to Linda and Summer Lang, who with kindness and love cared for Eileen in her home for eight years. The Lang family loved Eileen as a member of their family.
A memorial service will be held later in the summer in celebration of Eileen’s amazing, entertaining and loving life.
Please make any donations in her memory to the Yampa River Botanic Park, P.O. Box 776269, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
