Steamboat Today - December 11, 2007
Robert Vernon Holderman passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 29, 2007, at his home in Mesquite, Nev. He was 79.
Bob was born in Elkhart, Ind., on Aug. 25, 1928, to Vernon David and Audrey Messner Holderman. He grew into a fine young man of his generation and married his high school sweetheart, Betty Keeley, in July 1948 in Elkhart, where Betty and Bob returned for many reunions of the Class of 1946.
Bob entered the U.S. Navy in 1946 and served as Dieselman 1st Class during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Bob made a career of sales, primarily related to heavy equipment used in the logging industry. He had many great tales of working with the loggers in the Midwest and later in the South. Bob turned to real estate in Atlanta as an appraiser.
After retiring, Bob and Betty moved to Steamboat Springs, where Bob worked in property management. He and Betty moved to Mesquite in 2002. Bob was a life-long member of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He became a Master Mason in 1953 at Kane Lodge #183 in Elkhart, Ind., and later as a member of Elk Mountain Lodge #118 in Steamboat Springs. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and served in civic and community organizations. Bob succeeded in a variety of occupations throughout his life, the most recent being the host of "Silver Retreads" on Radio Mesquite. No matter where Bob landed in life, he always made life interesting for anyone who knew him. Bob will be lovingly remembered by family and friends, and his stories shall live on.
Bob is survived by Betty in Mesquite and their two daughters, Susan Holderman Keller and her husband, Greg Keller, of Steamboat Springs, and Nancy Holderman Artley and her husband, John Artley, of Staunton, Va.; several grandchildren, Sean Keller and wife, Jordan, of Boulder Creek, Calif., Sarah Artley of Richmond, Va., Keith Artley and wife, Leslie, and Mike Artley, all of Staunton, Va.; and great-grandchildren Bella Keller, Elijah and Kiley Artley and Aidan Artley.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the fine Mesquite Rescue Squad and wonderful community of friends Bob and Betty have in Mesquite. According to his wishes, Bob was cremated, and his life was celebrated by his family and friends in a reception at the Oasis Clubhouse in Mesquite.
