George Barton Raner Jr. was born July 11, 1955, in Los Angeles to George B. and Marie (Coley) Raner.
He was raised in Rifle and graduated high school from Grand Valley High in what is now known as Parachute. Following high school, George entered the U.S. Marine Corps.
He married Bonnie S. Cowden on Dec. 29, 1979, in Las Vegas, and together they had three children. They lived in Grand Junction for a time and then for many years in Brighton, where George worked in community corrections. He later became a foreman in heavy construction. He and Bonnie moved to Craig in August 2006.
George enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and being with his grandkids.
He died Nov. 7, 2007, at his home following a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie S. Raner, of Craig; daughter Natasha Raner and Greg Kothe, of Greeley; sons Jason M. Raner, of Craig, Shawn Raner, of Craig, and Jonathan "Bobby" (Christina) Miller, of Lochbuie; grandchildren Bailey, Nacona and Bryce; sisters Teresa Raner, of Colville, Wash., Shawn Raner, of Grants Pass, Ore., and Melissa Gessel, of Colville, Wash.; brothers Donny Raner, of Las Vegas, Steve Raner, of Colville, Wash., Dwayne Raner, of Charlotte, N.C., Raymond Gessel, of Colville, Wash., Carl Raner, of Cleburne, Texas; and stepfather Joe Gessel, of Colville, Wash.
His parents George R. and Marie Gessel, and his in-laws James and Mary Cowden preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place, and memorial services took place Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at Grant Mortuary in Craig with Daryl Meyers officiating.
