Yampa resident Gary George Miller died at his home Sept. 26, 2007, surrounded by his wife, daughter and loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 57.
Gary was born Nov. 1, 1949, in Tonawanda, N.Y., to Olga Jamison and Arland George Miller. The family moved to San Jose, Calif., when Gary was a young child. Gary attended schools in the San Jose area.
Gary graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in industrial technologies and was an active and dedicated member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Gary proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Air Force Reserves during the Vietnam War era. After serving in the Air Force, Gary spent many years with a successful career in the semi-conductor industry in Silicon Valley, Calif.
In 1986, Gary and Sandy Stefano were married and together raised Sandy's three children, Kristine, John and Nicole. While the children were young the family would vacation at a home they owned in Stagecoach. It was at this time that Gary and Sandy decided to purchase a parcel of land near Crosho Lake in Yampa, with the intent of "someday" making the Yampa Valley their home.
Gary excelled in many sports including baseball, tennis, snow skiing, water skiing, racquetball and track.
With the three children grown and away in college, Gary and Sandy built their home on Crosho Lake Road and moved in December 1996. Gary had told Sandy when he was a little boy that he always watched Roy Rogers and Gene Autry and wanted to grow up to be a cowboy. The family's small ranch was Gary's dream come true.
Gary worked as an electrician for Steamboat Electric for several years while studying to obtain his Master electrician's degree. In 2005, Gary started his own company, Egeria Electric. Gary enjoyed being a contractor and self-employed.
Gary received a great deal of satisfaction from being involved in his community. During the 10 years that the family lived in Yampa, Gary has served as the vice chairman for the Routt County Democrats. Gary served for many years as a Routt County Planning commissioner, represented Yampa on the Museum Board of Directors and was a member of the South Routt School Board.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Arland.
Gary is survived by his mother, Olga Jamison of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, JoAnn of Phoenix; brother, Greg of Sacramento, Calif.; sister, Candy of San Jose, Calif.; wife, Sandy of Yampa; daughter, Kristine Turner and her husband, Chris, of Fiji Islands; son, John Mayer and his wife, Meagan, of Tracy, Calif.; daughter, Nicole Hollman and her husband, Jim, of Florrisant; grandchildren, Bryce and Roxy Turnier, Tristan Hollman and Brendan Mayer.
In Gary's own words, "I love my family. I love animals. I love my ranch!"
