Former Steamboat Springs resident Myron George Heinke died Sept. 5, 2007. He was 80.
Myron was born April 10, 1927, in Haybro, the only child of Hilda and George Heinke.
During his early years, he lived on a ranch with his parents and grandfather. When weather permitted, he rode his favorite horse "Neg" to school and in the winter he skied, a sport he continued to do until age 70.
In high school he acquired the nickname "Hank." This was how he was known from then on.
The day after graduation, all the boys in the class left for the U.S. Navy. Hank was the youngest and had to get his parents' permission to go. He served as a signalman third class for two years and came home to attend college in Denver.
In 1949, he met and married Lavinia "Denny" Irwin. They went to California on their honeymoon and decided that was where they wanted to live.
Hank spent his 32-year career working in the aerospace industry. He worked on many projects including the Saturn V rocket that put the man on the moon. He loved his job and found it very challenging.
Hank and Denny retired in 1987 and moved to Placerville, Calif., to be near family.
Never one to sit around, Hank's work ethic continued after his retirement. He spent many hours volunteering at the church, working on his home and helping friends and family.
For the past six years, he enjoyed many hikes with the Senior Hiking Group.
His legacy will continue in his three children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was laid to rest at Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery in Dixon, Calif.
