Former longtime Oak Creek resident Dorotha S. Matteson passed away Oct. 16, 2007, in Thornton. She was 97.
Dorotha was born Jan. 12, 1910, in Snoddy's Mill south of Covington, Ind. In 1940, she married Charles Edward Matteson and moved to Denver, where the couple raised their only daughter, Carol Jane. Dorotha worked as a waitress in many local restaurants where she enjoyed working and being with people.
In 1966, the couple moved to Oak Creek to be closer to the mountains. Ed passed away in 1977. Dorotha remained in Oak Creek and continued to work at Spiro's Trading Post for nearly 30 years until she "forced" herself to retire at the age of 82. She continued to live in her home independently until the age of 95.
Dorotha is survived by her daughter, Carol and her husband, Robert Bednar, of Westminster; granddaughters, Tammy and Lauri or Aurora; grandson, Ken of Denver; and sister, Bette Hembrey of Covington, Ind.
During her time in Oak Creek, Dorotha made many special friends, but she was especially close to the Callas family - Spiro, Maria and their two sons, whom she considered to be family.
Graveside services will be held at noon Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge. A memorial service will be held in Oak Creek at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at the South Routt County Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487.
