Steamboat Today - August 12, 2007
Former Steamboat Springs resident Donald Albert Squire passed away at a care home June 18, 2007, in Lansing, Mich. He was 84.
He was born to Andy "Mike" Squire and Elizabeth Allen Squire on July 2, 1922, in Greeley. His mother passed away while he was still a baby. At age 3, Margie and Jim Garrison, his aunt and her husband, took him into their home as a foster son. He lived with them until he graduated from Steamboat Springs High School.
That summer, he married Alliene Hareby and then went into the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific until the end of World War II. He was then honorably discharged. Their daughter, Donna, was born during the time he was overseas. Soon after his return, he and Alliene were divorced, and he spent some time in the Denver area, where he married Flora Jackson.
They returned to Steamboat Springs for a few years, and Albert worked mainly at service stations. In 1951, they moved to Michigan. Three children were born to this union, which later ended in divorce.
Albert married Dorothea David 42 years ago. She survives.
He worked until retirement as a security guard in Lansing. He enjoyed skiing, playing cards and tinkering with cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents; and a half-sister, Maxine White.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include daughters Donna and her husband, James Messner, of Colorado, Julie and her husband, Kurt Hopfner, of Michigan, and Marti Maurer of Michigan; son, Jim Squire of Michigan; eight stepchildren; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Janet Simpson of Colorado; a foster sister, Iva DeLonge of Oregon; five nephews; a special niece, Shirley Hanen of Oregon; and several cousins, many of whom still live in the Steamboat and Craig areas.
Memorial services were held July 6, 2007, in Lansing, Mich.
