Former Steamboat Springs resident Jeremiah Russell Palmer died Sept. 3, 2006, in Estes Park. He was 93.
He was born July 27, 1913, on a homestead in Byers to James Thomas and Nanny (Wallworth) Palmer.

He married Pauline K. Root on Dec. 24, 1935, in Fairplay. They lived in Byers and moved around the state and also lived in South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming. He spent the past 30 years in Estes Park.

He was employed as an undersheriff in Steamboat Springs and had an equipment dealership there.
He also was self employed in various jobs and worked in heavy equipment operation and maintenance. In the 1930s, he used the first diesel Caterpillar tractor in Colorado near Fairplay to build roads to the mines.

He had construction companies, worked with Caterpillar dealerships for many years and worked with his son in Estes Park for more than 20 years. He retired in the late 1980s.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge for more than 40 years in Riverton, Wyo.

He enjoyed gardening and the wildlife in Estes Park.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, in 1958; four sisters; and five brothers.

He is survived by his sons, Jerry and his wife, Pat Palmer, of Estes Park, John and his wife, Sharon Palmer, of Elko, Nev., and Robert and his wife, Kathleen Palmer, of Elko, Nev.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering was held Sept. 8, 2006, at the Allnut Funeral Chapel in Estes Park. A graveside service was held at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.
