Versel "Joe" Burch died July 24, 2007 at age 84. He was born Feb. 25, 1923, outside Booneville, Ky., in Owsley County, to Taylor and Lavada Burch. He was one of 10 kids to be raised on the family farm.
His marriage to Evelyn Gray began Feb. 2, 1946, after he returned from World War II. Joe and Evelyn relocated to Colorado in the early 1960s. They have raised five children, 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grand children, all of whom were adored and cherished by their father/grandfather.
Joe began ranching in the early 1970s after purchasing a ranch north of Steamboat Springs. In 1992, they relocated to a ranch near Dixon, Wyo., just on the Colorado/Wyoming border. Joe truly enjoyed the country life and relished the hard work. Even at 84 years old, he still enjoyed irrigating, taking care of his cattle and overseeing every aspect of the ranch. He truly enjoyed working and could work circles around most men, even those half his age.
Throughout the years, many strangers may have knocked on his door, but they were never strangers when they left. They were life-long friends. He was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of his company. He was kind, loving, honest, hard working, generous and compasionate. Joe was made up of all the greatest qualities and had a heart of pure gold. He was a great provider and treasured his wife, Evelyn, of 61 years, and adored his entire family.
Joe also loved hunting, fishing, playing cards and marble games, and truly loved pranks and jokes. He was funny himself and took great pleasure in making everyone around him smile. He was a small man in stature, but he wasn't a "small man." He was a huge man with a huge heart and was a huge part of our lives. He will be greatly missed but will live on forever in the memories held in our hearts.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; children, Burdetta, Larry, Barbara, Greg and Lori; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grand children; sisters Opal, Jeanette, Beatrice, Wilma, Lola and Marlene; and brothers Vernon and Leon.
It brings great comfort to know he is in a better place with God looking after him and guiding him through heaven. God must have needed another angel.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2007, at the Episcopal Church in Dixon, Wyo. The burial will be at the Savery Cemetery, with a potluck gathering for family and friends immediately following at the Burch Ranch. Everyone is welcome.
