Longtime Phippsburg resident Mark L. Williams died May 20, 2007, at the Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs. He was 82.
Mark was born May 31, 1924, in Ashland, Ky., to Mark L. and Lillian (McNeal) Williams. The family moved from Kentucky to Colorado when Mark was 8 years old. They spent a month and a half in Lafayette due to bad weather and then made their way to Craig, then Elk Springs, back to Craig and finally to Phippsburg. He attended school in Elk Springs, Craig, Phippsburg and Yampa. Mark did not graduate from high school but obtained his GED in 1985 along with his sister, Lila. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mark married Anna Mae Reed on Nov. 16, 1952, in Boulder. They made their home in Phippsburg, where Mark worked for the railroad, working his way up to the position of conductor. He retired after 42 years of service.
Mark was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, American Legion and a most faithful member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oak Creek. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He would get up early to shovel snow to beat the widows in town at this chore. He liked to buy all kinds of tools, even though he might never use them, and he liked to build models, especially ships.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Ellen Smiley; and brothers, Carl and John.
He is survived by Lila Rider, of Phippsburg, and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held May 24, 2007, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oak Creek with Monsignor Thomas Dentici officiating. Playing the keyboard were Andrea Shaffner and Gene Sanders. The soloist was Lisa Marie Schmitz, and playing the trumpet was Ray Zimpher. Pallbearers were Jim Goggin, Willy Smith, Jo Bender, Jim Nowak, Mike Kortas and Bo Iacovetto. Interment followed in the Oak Creek Cemetery.
