Former Hayden resident Betty Wales passed away peacefully on Nov. 22, 2006. She was 87.
She was born on March 6,1919, to Elizabeth Walker Levy and Edward Levy in Pelhman, N.Y. Betty had two sisters, Dorothy and Muriel. She married George Nelson "Crosby" Houston in 1941. They had three children, Jeffrey Nelson Houston, Randall Crosby Houston and Susan Emily "Suzy" Houston-Pattillo.
They lived in Yonkers, N.Y., until Crosby died in 1962. Betty remarried to his best friend, Richard "Dick" Wales after his wife, Frieda, died in 1969. Betty and Dick had many happy years together until he died in 1997 in Yonkers.
Betty moved to Hayden in 2003 and lived at The Haven for five months to be closer to her daughter, Suzy Pattillo, and her family, who live in Stagecoach, until Alzheimer's disease got the better part of her. She then moved to Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale until finally moving to Sandrock Ridge Rehabilitation Center in August 2005.
Betty was a dedicated churchwoman. She loved to iron altar linens from the Church of the Ascension in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. She never tired of organizing church fairs, where she sold her crafts. Betty was also a devoted den mother and PTA volunteer.
Betty loved to shop for antiques and refurbish them. She was a wonderful craftswoman. She made lovely things, including quilts, pillows and counted cross-stitch that decorated her room at Sandrock Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by her sister, Muriel "Mudge" Schumann of Keene, N.H.; her sons, Jeffrey Houston of Vail and Randy Houston of New Windsor, N.Y.; her daughter, Suzy Pattillo of Oak Creek; granddaughter, Kira Pattillo of Oak Creek; son-in-law, Joe Pattillo of Oak Creek; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
