Former Hayden resident Edith Katherine Smith Sandercook died Nov. 2, 2006, at the Sandrock Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Craig. She was 93.
She was born April 27, 1913, in Butte, Mont., to Frank and Daisy (Bray) Smith. She was raised in Butte, Sheridan and Big Horn, Mont., where she attended school.
Edith married Clifford Fread in Montana and lived in Kansas for a time. To this union a son, Robert, and a daughter, Bessie, were born. They later divorced.
She married Arnold Benson in 1936 in Melstone, Mont., and to this union a daughter, Barbara, and a son, James, were born. The family moved to Hayden, where Edith and Arnold eventually divorced.
Edith worked as a cook and waitress in various restaurants in the area and then worked as a cook at Solandt Hospital in Hayden. The family lived in the basement of the hospital. She married Alfred (Sandy) Sandercook in 1938 and worked in the post office as a clerk. Alfred was postmaster. She retired in the mid-1970s.
Edith enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting, traveling and playing slot machines. She was a member of the Hayden Congregational Church and the Rebekah Lodge in Hayden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Maxine Norscogg; a brother, Highland Smith; her husband, Alfred Sandercook; her son, Robert Fread; a grandson, Rob Fread; and a great-grandson, Dwayne Montieth.
She is survived by her daughters, Bessie and her husband, Bill Hayes, of Craig, and Barbara and her husband, Herb Montieth, of Hayden; her son, James and his wife, Shelley Benson, of Grand Coulee, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Laura Moore of Hayden; and her brother, Elton Smith of Great Falls, Mont.
Memorial services were held Dec. 2, 2006, at the Hayden Congregational Church with Pastor Janet Babish officiating. Interment of her cremains followed in the Hayden Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Hayden Congregational Church in care of Grant Mortuary, 621 Yampa Ave., Craig, CO 81625.
