Velma C. Van Kirk, 89, Grand Junction, died Dec. 11, 2012, at
Hospice Care Center.
Private services will be held.
Ms. Van Kirk was a bookkeeper and secretary.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Scibienski of Grand
Junction; one sister, Vera Threewitts of Greenville, Ohio; two
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

lived her entire life in Darke
County until she moved to Grand
Junction in 1997 to be near her
daughter.
In September, 1942, Velma married Herbert Grewe. One daughter
was born of that union, Linda (Grewe) Scibienski. Herbert passed
away in 1954. In August, 1957, she married Paul C. Van Kirk, Jr .,
who predeceased her in June, 2009.
She worked with Herbert on their farm. After his passing, she
worked as a bookkeeper. Before retiring, she worked at Van Kirks’
Grocery and Tavern, a small family business. Her greatest pleas ure
was sewing and crocheting. She was an excellent seamstress and
made many quilts for her family, all stitched by hand.
Velma was predeceased in death by her parents and both husbands;
two brothers, Everett Dickey and Glen Dickey. She is survived by
her daughter; two grandchildren, Dustin Whetstone and Tara (Whetstone)
Hicks; two grandchildren, Aaron and Jennifer Hicks; and a
sister, Vera (Dickey) Threewits.
It was the family’s decision to have a private visitation. Interment
will be at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. The
family requests that any memorial contributions be made in Velma’s
name to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 3090 North 12th
Street., Unit B, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
