Mary Skelding DAVIS, 72, of Vail, died Friday, Aug. 25, at a nursing home in Boonville, Mo.
A vital, active woman in retirement, she was besieged by Alzheimer's disease two years ago, and it killed her.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. at Vail Interfaith Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Moncrief of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration officiating. The family will receive friends at the Seasons at the Green at the Vail Golf Club following the service.
Born April 4, 1923, at Wilmington, Del., she grew up in Hingham, Mass. She went on to Cornell University, where she studied English and met Ralph E. DAVIS Jr. She married him Nov. 2, 1945, in Flushing, N.Y.
The couple moved to Missouri, where Ralph managed the family farm for 22 years. They subsequently lived in Santa Barbara, Calif., for six years before retiring to Vail 22 years ago.
She was known for her absolute devotion to Vail. She skied, golfed, and gave freely of her time to many organizations.
A member of Alpha Phi sorority, she was also a docent at the Vail Ski Museum and a volunteer at the Betty Ford Alpine Garden. She was also a member of the Vail Valley medical Center Auxiliary and a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Boonville.
In addition to her husband, surviving her are two sons, Ralph DAVIS III of Camano Island, Wash., and Paul DAVIS of Boonville; one daughter, Nancy (Mrs. Steve) KERBY of Edwards; one sister, E. P. BERNARD of Searsmont, Maine; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Jonathan DAVIS.
