Silas "Si" Grantham was born on
February 24, 1921, in Walnut
Grove, MO to Floyd and Flora
(Killingsworth) Grantham.
Si attended Southwest Missouri
State College, graduating in 1942.
He served in World War II stationed
in the Pacific where he was
aboard the destroyer "U.S. Cony"
for 37 months.
On January 24, 1948, Si married Helen Pecha, and in 1959 they
adopted their son Jody and in 1960, their daughter Theresa.
In April of 1956, Si and Helen moved to Grand Junction, CO and
Si worked as a Manager for Tim Campbell at Holsum Bakery, for 27
years, from 1964 - 1975, then from 1975 - 1986 he worked as the
Manager for City Market on 1st and Orchard before retiring in 1986.
Si was an active member in the community. He was a member of
the Grand Junction Bowling League, Lincoln Park Men's Golf Club,
Club 20, Chamber of Commerce (eight years), Chairman of the
United Way Fund in 1970, 12 years with the United Way, Economic
Development Committee, City Council from 1971- 1975,
Mesa County Health Dept., Museum of Western Colorado, Good
Friday Breakfast Committee, JUCO Committee, a member of the
Elks Club for 32 years, Optimist Club member for 30 years, Quar -
terback Club, Mesa County Cancer Society Board and Volunteer
Driver, Chipeta Girl Scout Council, and a volunteer at the Grand
Junction Visitor Center. In addition to his many community involvements
Si received many community awards; Chamber of Congress
Citizen of the Year in 1984, Elk of the Month twice; in December
of 1967 and December of 1989, Hometown Hero in
February of 1992, State of Colorado Volunteer of the Year for the
American Cancer Society for the 1991-1992 year, and the Kiwanis
Club Citizen of the year in 1992.
Si was known as Grand Junction's Biggest Little Angel. He is survived
by his wife, Helen Grantham of Grand Junction, CO; son, Joseph
Grantham of Aurora, CO; daughter, Theresa Smatla of Grand
Junction, CO; sister, Sue Jones of Mountain Grove, MO; brother,
Roy Lee Grantham of Springfield, MO; four grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents,
Floyd and Flora Grantham; and his brother, Gene Grantham.
A visitation for Si will be held on Friday, December 21, 2012, from
9 - 11:00 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary with a funeral service
starting at 11:00 a.m., and burial following in the Veterans Memorial
Cemetery of Western Colorado.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the
American Cancer Society, 2255 South Oneida Street, Denver, CO
