The Baughman Family

Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 8A - December 19, 2012

Larry left us suddenly to begin
his heavenly journey in the early
minutes of December 15th, due to
complications from Multiple
Sclerosis. He was the second of
seven children born to Bob and
Frances (Keithley) Baughman,
and a fifth generation Grand
Junction native. Larry grew up on
the family farm learning many
valuable life lessons including the
importance of family, a strong
work ethic, and good moral character.
His early education in
Catholic schools further impressed
upon him these virtues.
Larry graduated from Grand
Junction High School in 1970,
attended Mesa College, and
graduated from the University of
Colorado, Boulder with a BS in
Mechanical Engineering in 1976.
He married Kathleen Takach that
same year. Their son Alex was born in 1979. Larry shared a very
special and close relationship with Alex, always teaching by ex -
ample and sharing his life's experiences.
Larry was employed by the Colorado Dept. of Transportation as a
Right of Way Engineer from 1977 - 2005. He was licensed as a Professional
Engineer and a Professional Land Surveyor. He had an encyclopedic
memory of Region 3 roadways and projects that he
helped to build, and was a knowledgeable and valuable asset to his
"CDOT family".
Larry was diagnosed with primary-progressive MS in 1981. As the
illness progressed, his complications increased. He continued to
work in spite of his physical disability, but made the decision to retire
in 2005. Larry was well respected by everyone who knew him
for the love and devotion to his family, dedication to his career, and
for always being a model of strength, dignity and grace. Larry never
allowed himself to be defeated by an illness he could not control.
Larry loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. In his earlier years
he also enjoyed building and riding his custom Harley Davidson
motorcycle, his '57 Chevy hardtop, and his '66 Chevelle SS 396.
He was an avid fan of sports of all kinds, especially his favorite
team the New York Yankees. He had a special interest in education,
particularly history and science. He had a great love for his country
and kept well informed on current events. Larry was a member of
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Larry will always be remembered for his gentle spirit, his unique
sense of humor and commitment to God. He was interested in the
activities of those close to him, and had the gift of making everyone
feel special with his kind smile and a story to share. He enjoyed life,
was very level headed, rational and slow to anger. He will be greatly
missed by his family and friends.
Larry is survived by his wife, Kathie; son, Alex; mother, Frances;
brothers, Jim, Kent (Lynn), and Bruce; sisters, Mary (Harvey)
Schuchman, Roberta (Richard) Lawrence, and Barb (Mike) Asher;
along with many nieces and nephews. His father, Bob, preceded him
in death.
The Baughman family would like to thank the wonderful staff o f
Hospice and Palliative Care for the kind and compassionate care that
Larry and his family received over the last four and one half years.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care
of Western Colorado.
Visitation will occur at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary on Thursday ,
December 20th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary starting
at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Immaculate
