Phillip Richard "Dick" Latham passed away at his home in North Park on July 11, 2009. He was 79.
He was born Dec. 31, 1929, to Charles Homer and Marie Florence (Roth) Latham in Walden. Dick attended grade school at the North Park Butler District School and graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1948. Dick was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in Korea. After the Army, he drove trucks, mostly "long haul," was a ski instructor at Hidden Valley Ski Resort and was a member of Ski Patrol at Mount Werner in Steamboat Springs. He also had a long career as a heavy equipment operator at Twentymile Coal Mine in Hayden.
Summers during his youth and most of his adult life were spent working with the family on the Latham Ranch in North Park. After retirement, Dick drove shuttle buses in Steamboat Springs.
He married Delia Maxine Jump in 1954. They had one son, Charles Richard "Rick" Latham. In 1962, Dick married Jeannie Jones. They had two children, Tonya Denise and Russell Dean Latham. On July 24, 1999, Dick and Phyllis (Muth) married, and he became stepfather to Phyllis' children William "Bill" Muth and Monique Macchia. They resided at their home on the Latham Ranch.
Dick had a special connection with all children. Being "Papa" to JJ Macchia and Paisley Lyons brought him great pleasure. He also enjoyed working on the ranch, camping and making chain saw wood carvings of cowboys and bears. Dick was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and was baptized by Pastor Tex soon after. He loved his church family and all the church activities. Dick was especially proud of the black train engine he constructed for the church float in the Walden Rodeo Parade. The engine now sits in his front yard at the ranch.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Latham; father, Charles Latham; step-mother, Ruth (Lance) Latham; and brothers Charles "Chuck" Latham, David "Gene" Latham and Chester "Chet" Lee Latham.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Latham; children Charles Latham, of Coalmont, Tonya Latham, of Oklahoma City, and Russell Latham, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sisters Irene Julia Robinson and Sandra Carol Knox; brother Jack Steve Latham; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held July 18, at Mountain View Baptist Church in Walden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain View Baptist Children's Fund.
