Funeral services for John Zufferey were conducted in Steamboat Springs at the Catholic church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Father Meyers was in charge of the services. Pallbearers were Logan Crawford, Elmer King, Harry Render, R.J. Gwillim, Sam Trentaz and H.P. Heid. Burial was in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery. A. W. Heyer was the funeral director.
John Zufferey passed away at his home near Twin Falls, Idaho, February 2, following an illness with pneumonia. The body was shipped to Steamboat Springs for burial arriving on the train Monday afternoon.
He is survived by on e brother, Alexander Zufferey, of Pleasant Valley, one sister, Mrs. Maline Freely of Switzerland, a number of nieces and nephews and more distant relatives. Among his nieces are Caroline and Marie Zufferey of Pleasant Valley and Mrs. Louise Turner of Fort Collins, the only ones residing in the United States. Mrs. Turner came to Steamboat Springs for the funeral service.
John was the fourth of the five sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Zufferey, born in Chippis Valais Co., Switzerland, on November 29, 1856. IN 1881 he came to the United States, going first to St. Louis, Mo., living there for four years. He moved to Arkansas, stayed there for a year and a half, and then went to Denver, Colo. In June, 1889, he came to Routt County locating at the mouth of Morrison Creek where is took up a pre-emption claim. In 1905 he filed on his homestead on Morrison Creek.
He returned to Switzerland in 1912 to visit his relatives, staying about six months, returning to Routt County in November of that year. He went to Idaho in 1915 and bought an 80-acre farm where he had since made his home. Three years ago he visited his relatives in Pleasant Valley and looked after his ranch interests there. He never married. His interests were centered upon his ranching enterprises, and he was a good neighbor and friend in his community. The funeral services were attended by a large number of his friends in the county.
