Steamboat Pilot - January 19, 1939

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Katherine Zufferey, pioneer resident of Pleasant Valley were held at the Catholic church in Steamboat Springs on Friday, January 6. She passed away at her home at 11 p.m. on Monday, January 2. Death was caused by heart and kidney disease known as dropsy.

Rev. Father Slattery of Craig officiated at the services which began at 2 p.m. The pallbearers were Logan Crawford, John Crawford, Harry Render, Ray Monson, Claude Luekens, and Sam Trentaz. There was a large attendance of friends. The flower tributes were profuse and lovely. Internment was in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.

Katherine Zufferey was born in Switzerland November 25,1853. She was the wife of Alexander Zufferey to whom she was married in Switzerland in April, 1883. They came to America in 1887, going first to Denver where they stayed for two years. In 1889 they came to Routt County and settled at the mouth of Morrison Creek, living for eight years with Mr. Zufferey's brother.

In 1899 they moved to Pleasant Valley. In 1919 they went to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho with their daughters, Caroline and Marie. They lived in Idaho eight years and came back to Routt County in 1927 to live on their ranch in Pleasant Valley.

She was the mother of six children, three boys and three girls. One of her sons was drowned in the Yampa River in 1894. One son died in infancy in Switzerland and the other son died as a babe while the family lived on Morrison Creek. Two of the daughters, Caroline and Marie Zufferey, are living with their father in Pleasant Valley. The other daughter, Mrs. Louis Turner, lives in Bellvue, Colorado. There are three surviving grandchildren.

Katherine Zufferey was a kind and loving mother and a good neighbor. She will not be forgotten by the many friends who mourn her passing with the devoted family.
