1929, in East Orange New Jersey
to Robert and Louise (Egner)
Freytag.
Carl earned a B.S. in Mining
Engineering at the University of
M i s s o u r i - R o l l a i n 1 9 5 1 . H e
worked at the Climax Molybdenum
mine near Leadville before
honorably serving in the Army
during the Korean Conflict. After returning to Colorado, he worked
in the mining industry in Western Colorado and Utah.
He married Charlotte (Hotz) Freytag on May 30, 1959. Carl later
attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and then obtained his
teacher's certification. He taught High School Math and Science in
Arvada and Grand Valley Colorado for several years, but eventually
returned to mining. He worked in Colorado's oil shale development

until his retirement in 1991. Carl enjoyed the outdoors through out
his life, and family vacations were often spent backpacking, fishing
and camping. Carl's first love was his family, but the Colorado outdoors
was a close second. In retirement, he enjoyed lunches and
fellowship with other miners, the RAM's, and tending his vegetable
garden. He was still summiting 14'ers in his late 60's, elk hunting in
his 70's, and fishing and skiing in his 80's.
