Myers Noell, of Miami Shores, Fla., passed away peacefully on Jan. 23 surrounded by family. Another member of the Greatest Generation is gone, having set a fine example for those who knew and loved him.
Born Oct. 15, 1924, in Louisville, Ky., Myers went to South Florida at an early age. He learned very young the beauty of Biscayne Bay and had a life-long love with the water.
He graduated from Miami Edison High School and later went on to graduate from Capitol University in Columbus, Ohio. He completed his studies in electrical engineering at Indiana University.
During the World War II years, he accomplished his flight training in Ft. Worth, Texas, and subsequently served in the rank of lieutenant as B-24 pilot in the Army Air Corps.
In post-war years, he and his brother Lane founded Florida Wire Fabrics in Hialeah, Fla., producing aluminum wire products and screening. The company, highly successful and technically advanced, soon became one of the first producers of coaxial cable in large quantities. The company was eventually sold to Alcoa Aluminum.
Myers was well known for his engineering skills and his ability to construct just about anything himself. Whether it was the machinery in his plant, the beautiful home he built in Miami Shores or the 50-foot sailing yacht MYJAC. Myers’ achievements and insight were remarkable to all who knew him.
Myers’ passion for the water and sailing spanned his whole life. Starting with building and sailing small dinghies as a teenager along Miami’s downtown waterfront, he would eventually become a national champion in the Raven Class, commodore of the Miami Yacht Club and member of Coral Reef Yacht Club. He was also an avid blue water sailor on the MYJAC, cruising the Caribbean and also the coastal United States from Florida to Maine.
He also maintained a second home spanning more than 25 years initially in Potato Patch, then Singletree and lastly in Arrowhead to be closer to his family. Throughout this period, he acquired a true love for the Rocky Mountains and the desert southwest.
He is survived by his wife, Jaqulyn Martin Noell; his brother Lane Noell; daughters Renee Noell Wettlaufer and Valerie Noell Murray; son Michael Myers Noell; and grandchildren Georgia Wettlaufer, Taylor Wettlaufer, Alexa Murray, Ryan Noell and Dylan Noell.
