Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 3 D Obituary - March 24, 2013

Zane was born on February 26, 1921 in Arkansas City, KS from
the union of William and Lora (Pike) McMahan. He spent his childhood
in Arkansas City, going to a two room school house and would
walk down the hill to a creek, at his teacher's request, to fill the
shared water bucket. He graduated from Grand Junction High
School in 1942, and enjoyed wrestling for which he went to state
tournament twice.
During his high school years he met the love of his life one day
after leaving typing class. In 1945 he would marry Thelma Ruth
Ratekin and from this loving union a child, Samuel was born.
Zane was an honorably discharged United States Navy veteran
serving in New Guinea and Australia where he did the dangerous
job of deep sea diving for salvage in the US Submarine Service from
1943-1945. He was a former resident of the outer lying areas of De
Beque, Mesa and Pear Park. He was a life member of the DAV and
worked for Western Neon for 32 years. He enjoyed fishing and was
a good fishing teacher as Zane taught Thelma how to fish with spinners
and she turned out to be a better fisherman than himself. He
enjoyed camping and exploring the four states areas looking for Indian
petroglyphs and hiking in the mountains.
Zane felt that the Bible verse John 3:16 was an important part of
his life and lived by the Golden Rule, of "Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you".
Zane leaves behind two grandchildren, Stanton and Shawn McMahan
both of Grand Junction, CO; a brother, Norris "Bud" McMahan
of Naturita, CO; two sisters, Charlotte Healm and Dorothy Fountain,
both of Salem, OR, and special friends, Richard and Mary Mendenhall,
Carol and Jerry Lee, and Rick and Delia Ferguson.
Zane was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Thelma; a son,
Samuel, and a sister, Joan Wetherford.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, March 28,
2013, at Martin Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative
Care of Western Colorado, 3090B N. 12th, Grand Junction, CO
