Carl Patterson Lathan Jr. was
born July 26, 1922, and flew to
heaven on March 21, 2013.
He was the only son of Carl and
Pattie Lathan, growing up in Virginia
and having misadventures
with his chemistry set. He served
with the Marines in WWII, and
set off for Wyoming with his wife, Marjorie, to attend the University
of Wyoming. Their marriage produced 65 years of lasting
memories as well as six children.
After graduating from the University of Wyoming with a degree in
geology, he moved his family to Texas and worked the oil rig circuit,
logging wells. His early family life included wild jeep trips into
the San Juans. Camping trips often included panning for gold in the
middle of the mountains, with an occasional bear confrontation.
The latter part of his career was spent working for the Atomic Energy
Commission and the USGS. As a master photographer, Carl
travelled throughout the Four Corners and built his own dark room.
His pictures hang from the walls of his children's homes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, and daughters ,
Laura and Anita. He is survived by his children, Bill, Kathie (Steve)
Cone, Pattie (Bill) Browder, and Carl (Kathy) Lathan; grandchil -
dren, Matthew and Jamie Cone, Maggie, Justin, and Matthew
Moorland, and Andy and Megan Browder, and great-grandchildren,
Brandon Bishop and Finn Cone. His absence leaves an ache in our
hearts.
A memorial service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church will be held on
Wednesday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to St. Joseph' s
Church.
