Patricia Melvin "Patty" Smith
died May 26, 2013, at Aspen
Ridge, where she was also cared
for by Hospice and Palliative
Care of Western Colorado in
Grand Junction.
Born in Bakersfield, California
on January 15, 1918, she was 95.
Patty completed her elementary
and secondary education in
Bakersfield and also attended the University of Santa Clara and San
Francisco State University.
During World War II, she served her country in the home front by
working in business in the San Francisco Bay Area. The family
business, Hopper Machine Works, produced oil field service equipment
that was important to the war effort as well.
She married Dr. Paul Smith on April 21, 1945, in Bakersfield, California,
following his return from service with the US Army Medical
Corps in the Pacific Theater. After Dr. Smith completed an internal
medicine course at the University of Minnesota and an internal
medicine residency in St. Louis, Missouri, the couple relocated to
Grand Junction in 1948, where Patty raised her family and was involved
in many local civic and charitable activities for several decades.
She was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Mesa County
Medical Society, tried her hand at golf at the Bookcliff Country
Club and enjoyed her family, travel, reading, gardening, bridge ,
square dancing, the arts and music.
Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Francis Ambrosis
Hopper and Ella Melvin Hopper, and her stepmother, Emma Hopper,
all late of Bakersfield, California, and her brothers, Francis
Hopper and Donald Hopper, both late of Bakersfield, California, and
her husband, Dr. Paul Smith, late of Grand Junction. She is sur -
vived by her son, Gregory Smith of Denver, Colorado; her son, Gary
Smith of Billings, Montana; her daughter, Sandy Smith of Denver ,
Colorado; her grandson, Patrick Smith of Denver, Colorado, and her
nephew, David Bleyhl of Davis, California.
A memorial service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6,
2013, at the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 F Road, Grand Junction,
Colorado 81505. There will be a reception at the same location
following the memorial service. A private interment ceremony for
family members only will occur at Memorial Gardens, 2970 North
Avenue Grand Junction, Colorado, 81504, thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions
be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090
North 12th Street, Unit B, Grand Junction, Colorado 81506, the
