Steamboat Pilot - March 22, 2014

May 12, 1940 - March 13, 2014

Former Boulder, Colorado resident Carl Phillip Houck, 73, died March 13, 2014 in Gore, New Zealand where he summered with his wife of 49 years, Joan Marks Houck. Houck was born May 12, 1940, in Denver, Colorado to Fred Adam Houck and Margaret Ledell Houck. A graduate of Regis High School, Houck earned an Engineering Degree from the University of Notre Dame and served as an officer in the US Navy. He married Joan Elizabeth Marks on July 11, 1964 in Pensacola, Florida. After earning his Masters Degree in Sanitary Engineering at the University of Colorado, Houck lived in Boulder and worked in the greater Denver area as a consulting engineer and project manager for 35 years. He retired in 2004 to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He enjoyed fly fishing the Yampa River in Steamboat and the Mataura River in Gore. He was known and appreciated for his “can do” attitude, resourcefulness and ingenuity. Ever an engineer, he would always have an extra board, special fitting or a wire just long enough to repair or create something new. Houck was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Steamboat and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Gore. He was a weekly volunteer for the Steamboat Lift-Up Food Bank. Friends remember him for his priorities of faith, family, friends and fishing. He was a genuine and steadfast man of great commitment, wisdom, passion and love. He lived his life with humbleness and integrity. He was a very much loved and devoted husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife Joan, their children and grandchildren including Steve, Jung, Kenyan and Isabella Houck (Fiji); Susan Ledell (Atlanta, Georgia); Bobby, Lydia, Bryce and Reese Houck (Fairhope, Alabama); Molly Houck and Troy Gorrell (Houston, Texas); Katie and Konrad Lehnert (Boulder, Colorado); and Julie Houck (Denver, Colorado). He was loved brother and brother-in-law of Kay and Jim Armstrong (Portland, Oregon); loved brother-in-law of Marilyn and David Oberhausen (Pensacola, Florida); Janice Valvano (Davie,Florida); and Bobby and Gerry Marks (Mobile, Alabama); and a loved uncle. A requiem mass was held March 20, 2014 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Gore, New Zealand. The funeral will be March 31, 2014 at 1 PM at Holy Name Church, 524 Oak Street, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The internment will be April 1, 2014 at 12 PM at Sacred Heart of Mary Church and Cemetery, 6739 S Boulder Road, Boulder, Colorado.
