Amelda Marie Tompkins, 93, Fruita, died June 18, 2013, at
Family Health West.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fruita Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, David Lee of Chandler, Ariz., and
Saul of Fruita; one daughter, Elaine Marie Mason of Fruita; one
sister, Lita Carpenter of Terreton, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Amelda Marie (Mock) Tompkins
was born to Archie and Nellie
(Shaw) Mock near Stockville,
NE.
She traveled with her parents at
six months of age, to a homestead
in Northwestern Colorado,
near the Utah border, a very remote
area. She moved with her
p a r e n t s , t w o s i s t e r s , a n d h e r
brother to Fruita in 1935, graduating from high school in 1936. She
then attended Ross Business College for one year. She married Ray
Tompkins on June 12, 1937, in Fruita and they raised four children.
Amelda was a full partner with Ray in their grocery operation, The
Fruita Wholesale Company, until it was sold in 1965. She then went
to Mesa College and became a registered nurse. She spent one year
of nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital, and 25 years working at Lower
Valley Hospital, retiring in 1994.
Her four children, born between 1939 and 1959, all graduated from
high school in Fruita. She continued to live in the home that she became
a part of in 1937 until her death.
She is survived by children, David (Patricia) Tompkins of Cha ndler,
AZ; Saul Dale (Wendy) Tompkins and Elaine (John) Mason of
Fruita; daughter-in-law, Janice Tompkins of Columbia, MO; 15
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray in 1996; son,
Kenneth; grandson, Ryan, and one great-grandson, William.
Visitation will be today, from 5 - 7:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast
Mortuary. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 10:00
a.m. at Fruita Christian Church, with graveside services following at
New Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita.
