Mary was born on February 27,
1929, in Nelson, Kansas to Ross
Hampton and Mildred (Morgan)
Hampton.
In the early 1950's she came to
Grand Junction, CO with her high
school friend Pat to live and work
in the big city. It was here she met
Nathin Liff whom she married on
December 13, 1954. Mary and
Nathin moved to Palisade, CO and had two boys, Ross Nathin Liff
and Mark Stephen Liff. Once the boys were in school Mary went to
work for First National Bank where she worked through three Bank
name changes and a move from fifth and Main Street to the current
location on fourth and Grand.
After 36 years of marriage Nathin passed away in August of 1991.
She connected the next year with her old high school sweetheart ,
Jack Hampton from Kansas. After a short romance they were wed in
Maryland, June of 1992. They moved to Grand Junction to be with
her family where they lived until Jack's death in 1999. Mary re -
mained in the area until her death to be close to her family.
Mary had a love for family, but oh how she loved her books. A big
night out was reading her favorite book in her favorite chair while
the rest of the family did their thing. She volunteered at the library
as often as she could and would spend the entire day at the Lincoln
Park barn during their annual book sale.
In later years she had a library of her own in her home that she
would retreat into just to be with her beloved books.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and both sisters, Ruth
Christian and Meda Trowbridge. She is survived by her two boys,
Ross Liff and Mark Liff; daughter-in-law, Erma Liff; two grandchildren,
Tyler Liff and Ashley Liff all of Grand Junction; her extended
family, Tina and Gary Schneider of Fort Mojave, AZ; their
sons, Adam and Wade of Las Vegas, NV; Laurie, Sonny and all the
adopted grandkids who always called her Grannie.
A Memorial service will be held July 5th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at
Heritage Church, 2403 N. 12 St. with a brief reception to follow.
