Warren Allan Petersen passed
away after a long illness on June
24, 2013, at HopeWest Hospice
and Palliative Care Center in
Grand Junction, Colorado.
He was born June 27, 1942, in
Lincoln, Nebraska, to Fred and
Wretha Kline Petersen. He grew
up in the Washington, D.C. suburbs and graduated from Bethesda
Chevy Chase High School. After graduating from Harvard University,
he went on to the University of Colorado Medical School. He
became a general surgeon and established his practice in Grand
Junction, Colorado, where he worked at all the local hospitals.
Warren closed his office in 1997, but he loved taking care of patients
and was determined not to fully retire from his profession.
Despite suffering several serious illnesses over the years, he continued
to assist in surgeries until late 2012.
For the last 15 years, he was able to indulge his childhood dream of
being a farmer. He and his wife bought saddle mules and moved to a
property where Warren was able to enjoy all the pleasures of animal
husbandry, growing hay, fixing fences and maintaining pastures.
His favorite pastime was always spending time with his family ,
usually while camping and hiking. As those activities became more
difficult due to health issues, he enjoyed the back country behind the
wheel of a 4WD vehicle, but most especially atop his favorite mule,
Babe. He continued to ride her on mountain and desert canyon trails
until the last months of his life. Warren was active in the Unitarian
Universalist Congregation of the Grand Valley.
Warren is survived by his wife, Shari; his sons, Kaj (Sarah), Jens,
Dirk and Jack; three grandchildren, and his brothers, Chris Petersen
and Lance Petersen.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 3:30
p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1425 N.
5th St., Grand Junction, Colorado.
