Charlotte F. MAYNE, 1926-2014.
Charlotte F. MAYNE of Gypsum passed away March 14 and a memorial service is planned May 3 in Grand Junction.
She was born Charlotte Mae FRAZIER on Feb. 17, 1926 in Gypsum. The only child of Merrial A. and Ruth E. FRAZIER, she lived in the Gypsum area most of her life. After graduating from Eagle County High School, she attended Barnes Business School in Denver. Returning to Gypsum, she worked for the Eagle County Welfare Office.
She met Joseph Evan MAYNE when he came to Gypsum from American Fork, Utah after finishing his tour of duty overseas with the U.S. Army. The two were married on Sept. 21, 1947 in the Gypsum Evangelical Lutheran Church. They spent their first married years living in the little house next to the Gypsum Methodist Church. She spent many years working for the Eagle County Clerk and Recorder and also the Eagle County Treasurer.
Charlotte lived surrounded by many family members. Early Gypsum stories revolve around a small town life where most people were related to each other or were close enough they all felt like family. Family was always Charlotte's first priority, and she was especially proud and thankful for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After leaving the county treasurer's office, in 1966 Charlotte began work for Eagle County School District as a bookkeeper. She continued there until her retirement in 1977. Retirement gave Charlotte and Evan the opportunity to spend the warm months in Gypsum and the winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. They enjoyed traveling with their fifth-wheel trailer and meeting new people. Health concerns and a milder climate prompted them to sell their house up Gypsum Creek and move to Grand Junction in 1994. No matter where they lived Charlotte enjoyed gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She won many prizes at the county fair for her beautiful flowers through the years.
After Evan's death in 1998, Charlotte lived alone for a few years before moving to the Fountains at Hilltop in Grand Junction. At the Fountains she met Maynard HESSELBARTH and they were married on April 18, 2008. Maynard brought wonderful joy and companionship to the last years of Charlotte's life.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and her first husband Joseph Evan MAYNE. She is survived by her husband, Maynard HESSELBARTH, two sons: Larry (Robin), Paul (Ann) and her daughter Carla (Warren). The light of her life were her eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Grand Junction at The Fountains of Hilltop, 3203 North 15th Street on Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m. A memorial interment service will follow at 3 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum.
