Lula Mae Jones
November 10, 1922 – September 13, 2013
Lula Mae Jones was born in
Montrose, Colorado to Homer
William Tyler and Florence P.
(Gibson) Tyler on November 10,
1922, and went home to be with
the Lord on September 13, 2013,
at the age of 90.
Lula Mae attended school in the
Montrose area, graduating from
Montrose High School in 1940.
Although her early dreams wer e
to become a teacher, she chose a
different direction because of her
father's illness and attended Central
Commercial Business College
in Denver where she was
able to take accelerated studies.
She graduated with a business diploma
in August, 1941. She then
returned to Montrose, where she
worked in the Montrose Bank and
helped take care of her father until
his passing in 1943.
In 1944, Lula Mae answered the call of her country by joining the
Women's Marine Corp. She served throughout the remainder of
WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.
After the war, while working in Grand Junction, Lula Mae met the
love of her life, Marlin O. Jones. They married on July 25, 1947 and
had two children, a son and a daughter. They were still madly a nd
completely in love when Marlin passed away in 1975.
Lula Mae was happiest when she was able to help others. After her
husband's passing, she worked at Sentinel Printing in Grand Jun ction
until her retirement and then joined the Mesa County Foste r
Grandparent Program, where for 19 years she spent five days a week
using her infinite patience to help children at the Grand Mesa Youth
Services Center learn that they really could succeed in school. Along
the way Lula Mae found many ways to help others - teaching Sunday
School for 50 years, Leading Cub Scouts, 4H and Girl Scouts ,
editing and publishing "Council Keynotes" (the Colorado Extension
Homemaker newsletter) and serving on the Mesa County Fair board
just to name a few. She was a grand lady and will be greatly mis sed
by all who knew her.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Marlin; four brothers ,
Homer Tyler, Hubert Tyler, Forest Tyler and Sunny Tyler; three
sisters, Eddythe Martin, Betty Tyler, and Verna Shawcroft; daug hter,
Fern Jones, and granddaughter, April Jones Taylor. Survivo rs
include one brother, Dale (Carolyn) Tyler; son, Jim (Janice) Jon es;
grandchildren, William Keith Jones, Tamara (Scott) Toombs, Jessica
Hoover, and Shayla Hoover; ten great-grandchildren, one
great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of the CLC Unit at the VA
Medical Center and the VA Hospice program for Lula Mae's wonderful
care while she was so ill.
Arrangements are under the care of Mesa Funeral Service of Grand
Junction. Services will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013,
10:00 a.m. at Victory Life Church, 2066 Hwy. 6 and 50, Fruita, CO.
A graveside service will take place immediately following at Grand
Junction Memorial Gardens in Grand Junction, Colorado.
