Jack Richard Oberly, 92, Clifton, died Sept. 24, 2013, at his
home.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Callahan-Edfast
Mortuary. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Clifton Christian
Church. Interment will be follow at Palisade Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter Jean Marie Oberly of Grand
Junction; one brother, Gene of Longwood, Fla.; two sisters, Leona
Gardner of Woodland, Calif., and Shirley Shelton of Clifton; six
grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Jack Richard Oberly, age 92,
passed away Tuesday, September
24, 2013, at his home in Clifton.
He was born in Palisade, Colorado
to Ralph Waldo Oberly and
Oral Leona Herman Oberly on
March 12, 1921. He never moved
far away; he was proud to say that
he had live on the same property
all of his life.
Jack graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1939. He married
Evelyn Belle Allen on April 16, 1943. They had one daughte r,
Jean Marie, and one son, Carl.
Jack was a fruit farmer, raising peaches, pears, and apples. He
loved his farm. Jack was a very generous man. He often took a truck
load of peaches to Oberlin, Kansas to sell in a friend’s grocery store.
He would offer you fruit for free if you would come and pick it up.
He also worked as a school bus driver, and as a mechanic for
Wagner’s Garage in Palisade.
Jack helped his father in the manufacturing of liquefied lime -sulphur
for spraying fruit trees. They later sold their business t o C.D.
Smith Chemical Company, later known as McKesson Chemical. He
went to work for Smith Chemical to assist them in making the
lime-sulphur, and retired from McKesson Chemical. He was also a
truck driver for them.
He was a volunteer fireman for the Clifton Fire Department fo r
many years. He was a member of the Clifton Lion’s Club for 68
years, with near perfect attendance. He was most interested in the
Lion’s work to save eyesight. He worked with Kid’s Sight, which
checks pre-school and first grade children's eyes for diseases which
may lead to blindness later on. He had received the Melvin Jone s
Fellowship Lion’s Award, the highest award possible.
Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved cooking, especiall y
apple pies and apple dumplings. He often made potato soup for t he
Lion’s Club. He loved young children, he always kept a little c andy
or gum in his shirt pocket to give them and they always knew that he
had something in his pocket for them. He enjoyed helping his
neighbors with irrigation water, or anything else. He will be g reatly
missed.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn, and his son,
Carl Waldo Oberly, both in 2003, and two sisters, Maxine Sorter
and Thelma Gardner.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Marie Oberly; daughter-in-law,
Carol Jean Oberly; six grandchildren, Tina Kanoa of Clifton; Marni
Estrada of Palmer, AK; Monica Dallmann of Sun Valley, NV;
Christopher Walsh of Craig, CO; Calvin Walsh of Grand Junction,
and Caryn Bourque of Littleton, CO; 13 great-grandchildren, and
five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Gardner of
Woodland, CA, and Shirley Shelton of Clifton, and one brother,
Gene Oberly of Longwood, FL.
Visitation will be from 3 - 5:00 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2 013
at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p .m.
on Tuesday at Clifton Christian Church. Internment will follow at
Palisade Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Clifton Christian
Church Building Fund, 615 Interstate 70-Business Loop, Clifton,
